St. Stephen and St. Alexander stand by me. I, Chaplain Hermann Schlüter, now have to face these human beasts all by myself. And who knows what they will do here in the church! The Alexanderstift is truly venerable, but it has never seen such a catastrophe in all that time. Those were blissful times when Count Walbert founded the Alexanderstift almost 800 years ago, in the year of the Lord 872, and decreed that a community of clergymen, the canons, should take care of the precious relics. The blessing and miraculous power of Saint Alexander radiated from Wildeshausen. By virtue of her importance, our church was expanded more and more magnificently and beautifully. Around 1200, so it‘s said, the wooden building was replaced by a stone building, with the west wing and the entrance gate being equipped with two large towers. According to the old records these were not well built and therefore collapsed only a few years later. However, in the following years the church was re-constructed in red bricks that are typical for that time to be as glorious as it is today. The interior was gradually decorated with wonderful paintings and frescoes. The canons now manage nine altars dedicated to our most important saints. We also have a variety of preciously decorated reliquaries, with the miraculous relics of Saint Alexander of course being the most important. All of this is now in great danger! Ten years ago, in 1622, General Mansfeld's troops marched into Wildeshausen and devastated and destroyed some of the monastery's buildings - but at least left the interior of the church untouched. Not that the imperials who came to drive out the Mansfelds were the purest angels, by no means! Those marauding mercenaries don´t care which master they serve, as long as they are allowed to do what they do best: shoot, murder, rob and do violence to good people! And now the Swedes are at our gates. They bombarded the city because the imperial troops didn't want to withdraw without a fight. And since the Swedes are Protestants, they are about to disguise their greed as godly iconoclasm. There is really nothing Christian about that! God stand by me!

Schwedish Soldier: Aaah, what am I looking at! Jewelry of precious silver and gold! Step aside, priest!

Schlüter: No! No! Not the relics of Saint Alexander!
