Welcome to the magical world of space, sound and sensory experience.
The small hop storage, in German “Kleiner Hopfenspeicher”, is the starting and crystallization point of the Hornburg “Garden for the Senses”, whose stations are spread across the entire city. There you will come across such magical artifacts as an octoscope, a sound column or a humming stone. At the same time, the “Kleiner Hopfenspeicher” is a historical place that dates back to 1606. It is the “little brother” to the large hop storage or “Großer Hopfenspeicher” on Hornburg´s Dammstrasse and also the counterpart to it in terms of social history. The living and working conditions here were significantly more cramped than in the great “Hopfenspeicher”. Nevertheless, the small hop storage also tells of Hornburg's economic prosperity, which was made possible by local hop cultivation during the 16th and 17th centuries.
At the beginning of the 1980s, the owner of the house didn't know what to do with the old building and applied for a demolition permit, but fortunately the monument protection authority objected. Responsibility for the building subsequently passed to the city, which arranged for extensive renovation. In 1989, the Free School for Music and Instrument Manufacturing moved in and filled the old house with new life. Under the direction of Ingrid and Jochen Schult, a wide range of cultural projects with workshops, seminars and other qualification opportunities were developed here over many years. And this is where the concept of the "Garden for the Senses" with its exhibits spread across Hornburg was born. An equivalent to this can be found on the upper floor of the house, where a large number of unusual musical and sound instruments are kept to this day. Since 2015, the Association for Culture in the City of Hornburg has taken on the legacy of the Free School. With the modernization, which reconciles the old hop store with the requirements of the 21st century, the “Kulturhaus im Vorwerkswinkel” is created, which serves as the center, contact point and hub of the Hornburg cultural scene.
