Welcome to Wigaldinghus, an important estate of our family at the Huntefurt. My name is Altburg and I am the consort of Count Waltbert from the dynasty of the famous Saxon duke Widukind.
When the Frankish King Charlemagne decided in his unfailing wisdom to bring Christianity to us here in Saxony, it was my dear husband's grandfather, Duke Widukind, of all people, who offered the greatest resistance to the Franks. For years no-one of the two parties could defeat the other - not till the holy spirit and his angel of peace touched Duke Widukinds heart and converted him to Christianity. King Charlemagne himself even became his godfather! Since then, Christianity has found its way into Saxony. However, almost 100 years after the christening of the Duke, the pagan faith still lives on in parts of Saxony. A few years ago there even was a riot of Pagans that wanted to demolish Christianity and the Saxon nobility. But therefore it was especially important to Duke Widukind and his dynasty to hold on to, in their eyes, the only true belief -Christianity- and to propagate it even more. My husband Walbert had a church built not far from here above the Hunte, but he - like me - knew that this was not enough, neither for God nor for the honor of our family. So I urged him to seek the advice of pious men that told him about relics that gave the place where they were treasured a special blessing from god. Therefore Waltbert then asked our Emperor Lothar to write a letter of recommendation to the Pope in order to obtain authentic relics for the church in Wigaldinghus from Rome.
So he was pleasantly welcomed in Rome and received the bones of the Saint Alexander, the son of Saint Felicitas for his own church. Already on his way back from Rome to the Huntetal, miracles after miracles already happened. And especially when he arrived on the 7th of January 851. All of that was accurately written down by the monks in Fulda.
My husband Walbert and I then built an even bigger church for the relics of Saint Alexander in which, from now on, all faithful people should be appropriately welcomed.
Twenty years later we even set up a monastery for the spiritual salvation of our clan. A number of pious men who dedicate their lives to God are to guard the relics from now on. We also gave them the proceeds of our estates in Wigaldinghus, with our eldest son, who had become a man of God himself, taking over the administration. After his death, his nephew will inherit this responsibility from him. And this is how it should be from generation to generation, so that the Waltbert clan will remain in charge of the Alexanderstift and all possessions for all time.
